Allergy Testing

Patch Testing for Contact Allergic Dermatitis

We inevitably make contact with multiple allergens or haptens in our daily lives both at home and at work. Our skin may react badly giving rise to a local or a generalised rash.  UV light from the sun can also be a contributory factor especially between April and October. Identifying the offending agent can be a significant challenge but can be made easy with Patch Testing.

Series available include:

  • British Society for Cutaneous Allergy Series
(41 of the commonest allergens found in the UK and Ireland and a useful starting point).
  • Leg Ulcer Series (27 of the commonest allergens found in dressings and medicaments which may cause or exacerbate eczema associated with leg ulcers and varicose veins. NICE recommends patch testing in advance of treating leg ulcers/varicose eczema).
  • Bakery series
  • Corticosteroid series
  • Cosmetic series
  • Fragrance series
  • Hairdressing series
  • Plastics & Glues series
  • Shoe series
  • Textile Colours and Finish series

An appointment is necessary to assess your skin and patch testing requirements and will involve careful history taking and examination. Please bring all medication including creams and ointments to this appointment.

Patch Testing is usually carried out over 5 days.

  • Day 1 – Patch Testing chambers are applied to the back.
  • Day 3 – Patch Testing chambers are removed and 1st assessment.
  • Day 5 – 2nd assessment and issuing of data sheets on allergens idientified.

We can also test your jewellery for nickel if you have this allergy using a chemical test.

Cost €200 (includes initial consultation); €150  additional series.

Diagnostic tests such as patch testing attract tax relief from revenue.
